As part of our Gawler Local Business Hot Spot, we recently had the opportunity to interview proprietor Michaela Holmes of Pretty Sweet Enterprises. Michaela has worked within the business for approximately 2 years and predominantly works in production, marketing and distribution of the local confectionery while brother, Jay, works along aside her as business partner with their father, Vic, assisting also in the running of the business.
It was interesting to learn the long family history of business ownership that has primarily led to the local business, Pretty Sweet Enterprises, being born. Michaela tells me a little of the history. She says “While growing up my father, Vic Saville, and his brother, Tony, owned a well-known company called Berri Food Processors (initially starting up in the Riverland and then relocating to Lobethal in the Adelaide Hills) manufacturing foods such as the popular Mixed Fruit Pieces and Poppa Porkys Pork Crackle, and eventually leading into the Fruit Paste Industry. These businesses still exist today. The company now called Australian Pure Fruits, is still located in Lobethal while the Pork Crackle and Mixed Fruit Pieces businesses were purchased by Ultra Fine Foods.”
Michaela went on to tell us that her father continued on to start up another small confectionery business, Aussie Gold, in Charleston which produced honeycomb and all sorts of confectionery products and in time re-establishing the Peanut Brittles. She says that along the way they had re-formulated the Brittles and developed new and amazing products.
Now located in Gawler South, Michaela and brother, Jay, established a new entity, Pretty Sweet Enterprises and as things move forward the company has great ambitions with the development of their confectionery range and in the fabrication of confectionery equipment that will assist them in future operations.
Currently Pretty Sweet Enterprises have a range of delicious confectionery including their infamous honeycomb, brittle, sweet and spicy peanuts and other delicious chocolate confectionary. Often you will find them selling their products at markets all over town including the Gawler Lions Market on Sundays, the Parafield Market on Saturdays and then monthly markets at Saddleworth and Riverton along with the twilight markets that run in Campbelltown and Semaphore.
Michaela says “We love doing special events and recently attended the Houghton Fair which was just fabulous. We are also doing the Robertstown Strawberry Fete 18 November. We also jump on board to participate in local Shows and Fairs including The Gawler Show, Wentworth Show, Kadina Show, Burra Show, Clare Show, Kapunda Show and the Wentworth Junction Rally”.
Michaela loves the proximity of the Gawler Township to both the CBD and having Barossa right on her doorstep. She says, ‘It’s the Gawler Show and the local markets that I love and that attracts a lot of people to the area.” When asked if there was anything she would like see happen in Gawler she says “A new by-pass to alleviate the pressure of traffic flow through the main arterial road of Gawler would be great”
