Local Business Hotspot #3: Tenafeate Creek Wines

As part of our Gawler Local Business Hot Spot, we recently interviewed local winemaker, Michael Costa of Tenafeate Creek Wines.  Michael has been operating this successful winemaking business on the stunning property (at 1071 Gawler – One Tree Hill Road) since 2002. Interestingly back in the 1800s the Homestead on the property was named ‘Tenafeate’ – an adaptation of a Gaelic name meaning “The Whistling House”. The Homestead which was also situated near a running creek meant the creek was given the name “Tenafeate Creek”.

Michael shared with us some delightful long-standing history with his family and in the winemaking business. He says “My father, Larry Costa (a former hairdresser) first started off making wines as a hobby during the 90’s. During the late 90’s he was forced into an early retirement from hairdressing due to an eye illness (macular degeneration) and turned to winemaking on a more serious note. It was then that I undertook and completed the Bachelor of Oenology Degree at the University of Adelaide, with Flying Winemaker stints both in Italy and France to gain further knowledge in making wines. Our first release of wine was in 2002, where we made a Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese all sourced from local One Tree Hill Vineyards. Today, Tenafeate Creek Wines produces over 20 different wine styles, but we still retain that small batch, traditional, hands on methodology on winemaking.”

But the history doesn’t stop there. Michael tells us the passion of wine-making emerged from this grandfather who loved to make “home-made” wine for friends and family. He says “My late grandfather, Vincenzo Costa, was born in Italy (Calabria), and migrated to Australia during the early 1900’s. He loved to work on the land and grown grapes, almonds, olives and peaches, and had an amazing vegetable garden. He also grew grapes back in the 1960’s in the Barossa Valley, and sold most of the grapes to Hardy’s. In between growing grapes and raising 9 children, he made “home-made” wine for his family and friends, the wine was fermented in a concrete tank, and spent many weeks on skins before light pressing.”

Over the years, Tenafeate Creek Wines have won a number of Awards for various wines which can be viewed on their website www.tcw.com.au.

When asked what Michael loves the most about Gawler, he says “It’s the rich history of the area that I love the most and my favourite local event is The Gawler Show which attracts thousands”.

The produce doesn’t stop at the wine though, Michael says they’ve also produced a craft beer – “Toffs”: a crisply refreshing pilsner-lager! “There’s nothing like saluting the end of the week over a coldie and a chin-wag”
